Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.
Historic Return to the Australian Courts
The event organizers announced on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Summer Swing
The tennis star had previously revealed in the month of November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the start of play at the main venue.
Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I am thrilled to return in Australia and looking forward to playing during the summer season," Venus stated. "I’ve had so many incredible moments there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a venue that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has appeared in the primary tournament field.
Setting a Fresh Benchmark
The tournament indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open singles competition, eclipsing the record previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
