The Mayor-Elect states his intention to reside in the storied Gracie Mansion
The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core platform, did not confirm this decision promptly after his victory in November.
"The choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of directing all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents supported," Mamdani said in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
During his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
But his critics, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing although he is from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria digs.
Featuring butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
