The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive game where a young woman containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
