Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Recording That Sparked the Debate

The video footage, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who formerly acted in military or security positions.

"Like us, you all made an oath to safeguard and support this constitution," the lawmakers affirmed in the brief video. "And right now, the threats to our governing document aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can refuse illegal orders, you can reject unlawful commands, you should refuse unlawful commands. No one has to carry out directives that break the law or our constitution."

Trump's Angry Reply

The clip seemed to provoke a angry response from the former president.

On the following morning, Trump published on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate message, he stated: "This represents really concerning, and Dangerous to our Country. Their comments cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Leaders Respond

Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats published a combined announcement condemning the comments.

"Violent politics has no role in the United States," they stated. "Representatives who appeared in the video all served our nation with tremendous national pride and distinction. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and risky death threats against elected officials, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."

The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the protection of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme digital publications and withdraw his dangerous rhetoric before he causes harm," the announcement continued.

Officials' Firm Answer

The representatives who participated in the video also issued a statement.

"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who love this country and made an vow to protect and defend the founding document of the United States," they said. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we plan to maintain it. No threat, intimidation, or incitement will deter us from that fundamental obligation."

"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it subject to penalty by death for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their backs as they fulfill their vow to the national charter and obligation to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They continued: "All citizens must come together and censure the former president's demands for our murder and political violence. This is a moment for ethical certainty."

Further Governmental Responses

The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the execution of elected officials."

He continued: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should censure this right away and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "It is very risky, you have important representatives of the government instructing soldiers to defy commands, I think that represents unprecedented in American history."

The Conservative representative also according to sources informed journalists that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the crime of sedition" but that "legal experts have to examine the terminology and determine all that."

Executive Branch Statement

During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a reporter, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."

"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the official declared. "You have current representatives of the US Congress who conspired to organize a recorded statement to personnel of the US military, to current military personnel advising them to ignore the president's lawful orders."

She said: "The sanctity of our armed forces relies on the hierarchy, and if that system is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are fundamentally supporting."
