Chelsea Boss Maresca Rejects Manchester City Speculation as Pure Gossip

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded recent reports linking him with a return to Manchester City as "100% speculation".

The 45-year-old, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, addressed the persistent speculation surrounding his next move.

Maresca, named Chelsea manager in June 2024, has a contract that runs until 2029, with a possible extension available.

"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for these kind of things."

He further elaborated, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my focus, I have stated many times, is just about this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was connected to a role in Italy with Juventus. So I ignore it because I know that is without foundation."

Chelsea, presently placed fourth in the top flight, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.

Strain After Previous Remarks

Maresca's most recent statement come after he described a previous 48-hour period as his "worst" since arriving at Chelsea.

Those original remarks had fueled widespread talk of a potential rift between the coach and the club's ownership hierarchy.

When pressed if he had since spoken with the Chelsea's leadership, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about various topics. But about the post-Everton media session, no."

The Italian did confirm he would definitely remain at the club for the coming campaign and called on the fans to keep backing the team".

In more positive news, Maresca indicated that injured forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, possibly in contention for a match against Aston Villa later this month.

Perspective: An 'Open Wound'

The perceived disconnect between Maresca and the Chelsea board persists as an unhealed issue that continues to create unease.

While there has been no further escalation of the situation in the open, there has equally been no resolution forthcoming, leaving the matter unaddressed.

The mood during the manager's media briefings has grown notably strained, leading to fears it could impact what has otherwise been a promising beginning to the season.

Chelsea's sporting situation is strong: they are in the top four in the league, have reached the League Cup last four, and can achieve a favourable Champions League position with strong results in their remaining games.
