A Account of Surprising Generosity: When a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Ground
Back in the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to book accommodation after getting there, but upon reaching the city, a large conference was happening and all the budget hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.
Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of bed down in the airport – but quickly found that airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open all night. With no idea what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I caught a bus into town and began walking near a gaming venue, reasoning I might spend the evening somewhere that was open through the night. This was not ideal in the best shape to succeed at a crucial interview the next day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
The world needs more people who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared out of place as a woman spotted me loitering in downtown and inquired if everything was alright. I recounted my predicament and right away she suggested I could crash on the floor in her student dorm at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, considering that was where the important interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering me some free dinner: one sandwiches she brought back her part-time job. I had access to a hot shower and a secure location and secure to spend the night.
Looking back, it’s clear to me the significant risk she undertook being a woman allowing a male stranger she’d just met sleep on her floor. At that time I was in my own unawareness and was oblivious about things like that. Today, as a parent, I am astonished she offered that help – but still deeply appreciative.
I didn’t end up study at the Australian National University, and I never saw the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of generosity. My sincere desire is that karma has rewarded her act of kindness many times over. The world needs more folks who show such kindness.
